In vivo 4D visualization of CSF flow: healthy volunteers and hydrocephalus

چکیده
Introduction. In vivo assessment of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) flow velocities and flow patterns is a challenging task, due to the magnetic properties of the tissue that lead to very low signal in T1-weighted sequences. However, flow patterns can be an important discriminating factor between healthy subjects and hydrocephalus patients. Single-slice and multi-slice acquisitions, relying on inflow enhancement, and computational fluid dynamics techniques based on anatomical data, were used in the literature [1]. In this work, we used a threedimensional, time-resolved, three-directional flow-sensitive balanced SSFP sequence [2] to obtain a full three-dimensional description of CSF flow patterns in the brain of healthy volunteers and to compare it to findings in a patient with a three-ventricular hydrocephalus.

Quantitative Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid Pressure Gradients in Healthy Volunteers and Patients with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can depict not only anatomical information, but also physiological factors such as velocity and pressure gradient. Measurement of these physiological factors is necessary to understand the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) environment. In this study we quantified CSF motion in various parts of the CSF space, determined changes in the CSF environment with aging, and comp...
متن کاملComparison of blood flow velocity quantification by 4D flow MR imaging with ultrasound at the carotid bifurcation.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE 4D flow MR imaging is an emerging technique that allows visualization and quantification of 3D blood flow in vivo. However, representative studies evaluating its accuracy are lacking. Therefore, we compared blood flow quantification by using 4D flow MR imaging with US within the carotid bifurcation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two healthy volunteers (age 25.3 ± 3.4 yea...
متن کاملIn vivo assessment and visualization of intracranial arterial hemodynamics with flow-sensitized 4D MR imaging at 3T.
SUMMARY We evaluated electrocardiogram-synchronized flow-sensitized 4-dimensional MR imaging at 3T in combination with advanced 3D visualization strategies to ascertain its feasibility for the assessment of local intracranial blood-flow patterns in vivo. In large arteries of healthy volunteers, the temporal and spatial evolution of blood flow was successfully visualized and revealed--for exampl...
متن کامل4D MR imaging of cerebrospinal fluid flow in Chiari I malformation with and without syringomyelia and flow changes after decompressive surgery
Background The aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of 4D phase contrast (PC) flow imaging for visualisation and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow in Chiari I malformation. CSF flow was compared between healthy volunteers and patients with Chiari I malformation with and without syringomyelia. Moreover, the effect of a craniocervical decompression on CSF flow was studied in ...
متن کاملFast multiphase MR imaging of aqueductal CSF flow: 1. Study of healthy subjects.
Gradient-echo MR sequences are more sensitive to flow phenomena than spin-echo sequences are. We investigated aqueductal CSF flow by fast multiphase imaging. Fast multiphase imaging offers the opportunity to perform a dynamic study of fluid motion that is synchronous with the cardiac cycle. A section perpendicular to the cerebral aqueduct was imaged in 18 healthy volunteers. Serial, gated (ever...
